Man to face trial on rape, burglary charges

Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial of Kelvin Hill, more than two years after his arrest on rape and burglary charges. Hill, 47, of Crawford, was present for the jury selection hearing. Approximately 80 residents were called for jury selection at the Oglethorpe County Courthouse.

Data: Victims of county’s violent crimes know their assailants

Local crime data shows that violent crimes are mostly committed by those who know their victims — at least in Oglethorpe County.
Chief Magistrate Judge Megan Coile confirmed the numbers.
“There's always a connection between the victim and the accused,” Coile said.

A woman returned home at about 4 p.m. Aug. 16 to find a man with a gun in her home on Beaver Run Road, a Facebook post from the Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s office arrests 11 as part of multi-jurisdictional operation

Eleven people were arrested in Oglethorpe County as part of a region-wide sweep called Operation Washout Classic City late last month.
The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office made its arrests on May 21, in conjunction with the operation, which took place in several counties from May 18-25.

Flock cameras help spot crime, increase safety

Flock cameras have made an impact in Oglethorpe County.
The cameras, which were installed eight months ago, have assisted in 130 traffic tickets, seven arrests for suspended licenses and one arrest for a stolen vehicle in the past six months, 911 Director James Jackson said.

A recent string of alleged mail thefts has sparked concern among Oglethorpe County residents, according to numerous posts circulating in community social media forums. The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office encouraged residents to report the thefts to law enforcement in a Facebook post on Nov. 10.
