Incumbents Paul, Saxon cruise to victory in heavy turnout

 

Republican incumbents easily held onto their seats on Tuesday. 

 

Commission chair Jay Paul and District 2 commissioner Andy Saxon defeated their Democratic challengers in the election. 

 

Election assistant Steve McCannon said Oglethorpe County had a voter turnout of 78.9%, with 8,871 residents casting ballots out of 11,322 registered voters.

 

The state turnout wasn’t expected to be released until sometime Wednesday, after The Oglethorpe Echo’s deadline.

 

“I don’t know the statewide turnout, but I believe (Oglethorpe County) was above the statewide average,” McCannon said. 

 

Board of Commissioners

 

Paul had 68.18% of the votes, or 5,857 votes, to defeat Democratic challenger Patrick Kim Bonds.

 

“I’m greatly appreciative of all the people that supported me, and I’m going to continue doing the best I can to serve the county,” Paul said after his re-election results were announced. “Thanks to Patrick Bonds for running a good, clean campaign.” 

 

This will be Paul’s second consecutive term as chairman. 

 

Saxon finished with 73.80% of the votes, or 1,318 total votes, to defeat Democratic challenger Jaqueline Bosby and retain his District 2 seat

 

“I’m happy with the win and look forward to serving the people of District 2 for four more years,” Saxon said.

 

Georgia State House (District 124)

 

Republican incumbent Trey Rhodes ran against Democrat challenger Melanie Miller, both of whom were unopposed in the primary. Rhodes won with 72.32% of votes and 6,178 votes total. 

 

U.S. House (District 10)

 

After a heavily contested race in the primary, Republican incumbent Mike Collins faced challenger Democrat Lexy Doherty. Collins won with 72.92% of the vote, or 6,299 total votes. 

 

U.S. President 

 

In the presidential election, former President Donald Trump took Oglethorpe County with 70.92% of votes, or 6,254 total votes.
