An Oglethorpe County resident has qualified to run for Georgia’s 10th Congressional District seat this year.
John B. Dority, who lives on Watson Mill Road according to public records, is a Democratic candidate for the open seat after U.S. Rep. Mike Collins decided to run against incumbent Jon Ossoff for U.S. Senate.
The primary is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19.
Dority, one of three Democratic candidates, qualified on March 6, according to the Georgia Secretary of State’s election website.
Jeff Baker, who owns Peachy Plumbing in Wilkes County, is one of three Republicans running for the House seat. He’s listed as an Oglethorpe County resident on the state election website, but said Tuesday he lives in Wilkes County.
Baker, who qualified on March 4, said the confusion could stem from the fact his family owns property on Wesley Chapel Road, and he’s registered to vote in Oglethorpe County.
Dority is joined by Athens’ Lexy Doherty, who was the Democratic candidate in 2024, and Pam Delancy (McDonough). Republicans include Houston Gaines (Athens) and Ryan Millsap (Social Circle).
Collins defeated Doherty in 2024.
In the Senate race, Collins joins fellow Republicans Derek Dooley, the former Tennessee football coach and son of longtime UGA coach Vince Dooley, Buddy Carter, John Coyne and Jonathan McColumn against Ossoff, whose term began in 2021.
In Georgia District 124, which includes Oglethorpe County, Melanie Miller, a Greene County Democrat, is challenging incumbent Trey Rhodes, a Republican from Greensboro, in a rematch from 2024.
Early voting for the primary will start on Monday, April 20 and ends at noon Friday, May 15 at the Oglethorpe County Board of Elections at 41 Fairground Road in Lexington.
Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no Sunday early voting. There will be two Saturdays of early voting: May 2 and May 9.
