The Oglethorpe County Board of Education recognized Sara Hughes’ work-based learning program during its monthly meeting Tuesday night.
Hughes’ program provides high school students the opportunity to receive credit while working in an environment related to their career pathway.
Work-based learning is the application of skills and education to actual employment opportunities and allows students to be released from a normal classroom setting to gain education in a work environment where skills can continue to be developed.
“It is a (Career Technical and Agricultural Education) class,” Hughes said. “(Students) get elective credit. They get grades for going to their jobs, turning in their hours, turning in their evaluations. So we know that students can learn in all kinds of different settings.”
Students involved in the program who were present at the meeting included Madeleine Forschler, Genesis Palma, Dylan Anglin, Sydney Sniff, Giselle Padilla, Ricardo Padilla, Lauren Nash and Brian Hercules.
Sophia Wilson and Phil‘Drekus Jewell were not present at the meeting, but recognized as participants in Hughes’ program.
In other business, the BOE consented to funding for College Pro Landscaping to install a 447-square foot walkway of engraved bricks at the elementary school pavilion. The project will not exceed $11,000 and has been budgeted into the construction project.
The BOE also accepted a low bid from Elevate Construction for the school-based health center.
BOE chair Becky Soto recommended approval of the May 6 personnel report for Lillian Baucom and provided dates regarding end-of-year ceremonies for the elementary, middle and high schools.
The final budget meeting of the school year will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 20.
