The Oglethorpe County Board of Education is moving forward with grounds and facilities improvements.

Sod and track drainage work started this week with the goal of having everything complete in time for the Gary Matthews Invitational, the first track invitational in the spring. The board approved the upgrades at a maximum cost of $57,000 during its last work session.

The board also approved the purchase of a portable aerial lift, with costs not to exceed $10,400. The lift is a driveable device that elevates users to hang banners, change light bulbs and complete other high-reaching tasks, Director of Operations Paul Thiel said.

Oglethorpe County Schools owns another aerial lift, which they will continue to use.

“We have one, but the one we have doesn't fit through when we remodeled the gym,” board chair Becky Soto said.

In other news, the board:

  • Approved a second reading support position at Oglethorpe County Elementary School, funded with federal money. The school has one person in this role, supporting students reading below grade level.

  • Heard that Howard Shapiro is retiring from the Library Board, having completed all allowed terms as a representative for the Board of Education. Susan Robinson will replace him and serve alongside the BOE’s other representative, Amy Atao.

  • Approved its 2024 meeting calendar. With exceptions, most board of education meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on the first or second Tuesday of the month.
