No ID released for body found in Winterville

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a body found on a property on Double Bridges Road in Winterville on Feb. 25.
Foul play is suspected, according to the GBI, and the man’s identity is being withheld “until further testing is conducted” and next of kin is notified.
Oglethorpe County Sheriff David Gabriel said in a text message on Tuesday afternoon that officials will try to ID the body through dental records.
An Oglethorpe County Sheriff's incident report noted two people arrived at the Double Bridges home on Feb. 25 to search for a person, and when that person wasn’t located inside the home, they went behind the house into the adjoining woods, where they found the body.
The body was covered with tree limbs when it was discovered, according to the incident report.
Lisa Jarrett, who lives nearby, said she knew something was amiss when a coroner’s van left the Double Bridges property around 3 p.m. Feb. 25. When she passed by only a couple hours later, GBI vehicles were in the driveway.
Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Northern Judicial Circuit for prosecution.
The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook that an official statement would be released after the body was identified.

Elbert officials search quarry for possibly body
Board of Commission Chairman Jay Paul and coroner Jason Lewis said the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possibility of a body in a quarry on Rocky Drive.
The quarry is one of the quarries drained three years ago during the search for the remains of Jimmy Anglin. Lewis said the water is “completely back” to what it was before the joint effort to drain the quarry in the spring of 2022.
Only trash, industrial drums and tires were found in the quarries during that search.
Divers were expected to explore the quarry this week, Lewis said.
“We’re just passengers on this voyage,” he said. “We’re just trying to be supportive.”
