Excitement builds as OCHS prepares for homecoming

The Oglethorpe County High School community is gearing up for a spirited Homecoming week, featuring five days of themed fun, as students and faculty come together to celebrate school pride.

Oglethorpe County High School students, faculty and community members are celebrating homecoming this week under the sea, with five days of spirited themes, a parade in downtown Crawford on Thursday, a possible third football win and a Saturday night dance.

“This is going to be the best homecoming Oglethorpe County has ever had,” OCHS senior Andee Dellinger said.

With supervision, the student council takes the lead in planning homecoming. It’s in charge of the DJ and making sure teachers are on duty. They do all of the decorations — their favorite part — as well as spreading the word.

With this year’s homecoming being earlier than in 2024, the student council said time management and planning has been the most difficult part.

Sara Hughes, OCHS teacher and student council sponsor, said planning and participating in homecoming is a way for everyone to contribute to a shared experience.

“I think that it’s fun that we all get to have a small piece in that and pull together to the same direction,” she said.

The week of fun kicked off with Pajama Day and Soccer Moms/BBQ Dads Day, but there is still much more to go.

Students will cap off the themed spirit days with Dress Like a Teacher on Thursday to lead into the parade. Then, class colors on Friday — freshmen in black, sophomores in blue, juniors in red and seniors in white — before the crowning of the king and queen during halftime.

Last week, the student council got together to prepare for the parade, which will roll through downtown Crawford at 6 p.m. Thursday along the same route as last year.

“Normally we have around 30 (floats) and sometimes we have fire trucks from the volunteer fire departments, as well as emergency vehicles who represent the county,” OCHS teacher Jennifer Yauck said.

On Saturday, the gym at OCHS will be transformed for the homecoming dance, which begins at 8 p.m. and serves as the final capstone to a week packed with school spirit.

“Hopefully, this year will be our redemption year,” said sophomore Gloria Hgay. “We’re gonna make it bigger and better than it was last year.”
