GDOT plans to improve Crawford intersection

The Georgia Department of Transportation is in the early stages of a project to improve the intersection at Highway 78 and North Street in downtown Crawford.

The proposed improvements will address upgrades to comply with GDOT standards and requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A GDOT spokesman said bids are anticipated to open for the project in 2026.

“It will enhance efficiency and safety for vehicular and pedestrian movements by upgrading traffic signal equipment, pedestrian platforms, wheelchair ramps, pedestrian signals and crosswalk striping,” district communications specialist Will Volk told The Oglethorpe Echo in an email.

Christy Atkins, a senior architectural historian at AtkinsRealis, visited Oglethorpe County on June 3. AtkinsRealis is a design, engineering and project management organization.

Atkins said she surveyed the proposed project area for buildings with historic resources that could be physically impacted.

This includes buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and any properties 50 years or older that could be eligible for listing.

The Historic Crawford Depot is noted as listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is near the project area.

GDOT also has plans to update five other intersections in Lincoln and Newton counties.
