OCA receives funding to improve STEM garden
Oglethorpe Children's Academy and Satilla Mathews, the pre-K program chair, have received a G-SPAN grant to support the school’s transition into a farm to Early Care and Education (ECE) food center.
This grant is geared toward OCA’s STEM garden, where pre-K students grow vegetables and other plants and learn in a hands-on manner about the value of the food.
“In today’s world, where technology reaches younger and younger ages, it is important to return to the roots of childhood,” said Mathews, STEM garden manager and pre-K lead teacher. “Children learn best by using their senses to explore the world around them. We are excited to see what this new adventure grows.”
The funding is from the Georgia Health Policy Center through the Georgia State Physical Activity and Nutrition (G-SPAN) initiative. G-SPAN is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s State Physical Activity and Nutrition Program (SPAN).
