Local artist brings new art to Rowdy Rooster

The Rowdy Rooster will hold a reception for Marisa Mustard from 2-4 p.m. Sunday June 1. Her art will be available for purchase.

Artist Marisa Mustard is no stranger to displaying her art at Rowdy Rooster since completing a mural in January for the bakery and deli.

Though Mustard said she normally paints murals, a decision to “(take) a few weeks off” from painting led to the creation of her first interior art display.

“I like getting my art out in different places,” Mustard said. “I’ve never shown (it) anywhere in Lexington before, and I thought it would be cool to have it somewhere new, like a different audience.”

The display focuses on “nature and bright floral stuff” with several pieces made from wooden cut outs and canvas pieces, she said.

“I just like art that you can use, or like reusing pieces and making them into something else,” she said.

She said one of her favorite pieces to make was a wooden tiger because “(it was) really fun to just plan it out and think about it in a different way.”

“I’ve been really enjoying making the wood cutout pieces in multiple layers,” Mustard said. “Anytime I get to use glitter, it makes me really happy.”

The exhibit will be on display until mid-June and also includes pieces made from old car mirrors purchased from an estate sale.

“They were really fun to make because I love creating functional art,” she said. “So I attached (the mirrors) to these wooden blocks so that you could attach (them) to your front door and then hang your keys on it.”

Rowdy Rooster co-owner Jamie Lewis said the art “helps people realize that creativity doesn’t really have bounds.”

“I think a lot of people could get inspiration just from like ‘Oh, I had never thought that you could reuse this as a piece of art,’ ” she added.

Lewis said she and fellow co-owner Kathleen deMarrais are trying to support local artists and help Mustard gain business.

Lewis said Rowdy Rooster will also host a reception from 2-4 p.m. June 1 to meet Mustard and purchase her art.

DeMarrais added that Rowdy Rooster plans to collaborate with Mustard in the fall to create a Monet-inspired mural on a nearby building that will soon be renovated.

“I’m going to design it with her,” deMarrais said. “Flowers and butterflies, bees. That’ll be fun.”

For Mustard, the art exhibit is an “awesome opportunity” to display her work.

“I love public art,” she said. “Any time I get to share my art with anybody, it makes me happy.”
