Lexington artist Mary Ann Cox will send a copy of the "Twelve Days of a Dog-Gone Christmas" (pictured), which she created, to those who contribute to MOAS and other animal shelters.
Local artist Mary Ann Cox is giving back to the Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter and others by giving posters she created to those who donate to animal shelters.
The “Twelve Days of a Dog-Gone Christmas” is Cox’s adaptation of the song “Twelve Days of Christmas,” but themed around dogs. She asks for any kind of donation to a shelter for a copy of the poster, at no cost.
“This is something that people can enjoy at home, a Christmas decoration in exchange for helping those animals out here that don’t have any choice,” said Cox, who lives in Lexington.
She began the project in hopes of helping rescues and shelters in memory of her rescue dog, Cookie, a Maltese mix who recently died.
Using social media and word of mouth, Cox’s project has reached people across the country. She’s sent her posters as far as away as California and Kentucky, and she has raised over $500 for MOAS and more for other shelters.
Her posters have been sent to shelters for events such as auctions, and Cox hopes by spreading the word, more money can be raised for shelters throughout the country.
Cox runs the operation through Facebook, email, phone and direct shelter donations. She will send a poster through the mail after receiving proof of a monetary donation to a shelter.
MOAS also keeps Cox’s posters onsite for in-person donations. Donations go toward everything from food, supplies, vaccines and funding clinics for the 300 dogs and other animals at the shelter.
“The majority of our money, our funding and everything that keeps this place going is through donations,” MOAS manager Juli Huth said.
