Jennifer Yauck is the Oglethorpe County School System’s teacher of the year.
Yauck, who is a science instructional coach and teacher at OCHS, also advises the National Honor Society and the Science Olympiad team.
“I’m honored to represent the Oglethorpe County School System as Teacher of the Year,” Yauck told The Oglethorpe Echo in an email.
Yauck graduated from OCHS and earned both a bachelor and master’s in science from the University of Georgia. She also has taught at Washington-Wilkes High School, Oconee County High School and served as the director of 6-12 Science at Northeast Georgia Regional Education Service Agency (RESA).
She is a member of the Oglethorpe County Friends of the Library, Oglethorpe County Rotary Club and the Gamma Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. As a member of Gamma Tau, she helped to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to Oglethorpe County.
Early voting continues through Oct. 31
Two hundred-eighty people had voted early and seven absentee ballots had been returned through Oct. 20 at the Oglethorpe County Board of Elections Office.
Early voting continues for the special and general election from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 31, including Saturday, Oct. 25.
The precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Community Christmas prepares for season
Community Christmas is accepting financial donations, toys and other items as it prepares for the holiday season.
Financial donations can be made at communitychristmasoglethorpe.org, at The Commercial Bank in Crawford or mailed to Community Christmas of Oglethorpe County, Inc. 143 Bowen Farm Road, Crawford, GA 30630.
Donations of toys and other “fun items” for infants to teens can be made at a toy drive at Dollar General in Lexington, Toys for Tots, The Commercial Bank in Crawford, Oglethorpe County schools, the Children’s Academy or the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office.
Community Christmas helped 366 children in 157 households in 2024. The total assistance was $95,653.

Youth wrestling program holds registration
Oglethorpe County Youth Wrestling is holding registration for second- to fifth-grade boys and girls with the rec department through Nov. 7.
Cost is $65, which includes team shorts, a short-sleeve T and hoodie. Registration doesn’t include tournament fees.
Also, all participants will be required to purchase a USA Wrestling membership that covers the wrestler and the club from a liability standpoint. The cost is $42.
Practice will be held at the OCHS weight room (blue building at the first entrance). Practice times are:

Holiday shopping events scheduled
Here are three holiday vendor events for Oglethorpe County.
- The Christmas Marketplace will be held at the Crawford Depot on Nov. 21-23.
- Small Business Saturday in Lexington is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29.
- Christmas in Oglethorpe is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 13.
