Authorities found a 73-year-old hunter about 5:15 p.m. Monday after more than 24 hours in the woods in the Walker Gresham Road area of Stephens. His wife reported the Jackson County resident missing about 8:30 a.m. Monday, Oglethorpe County EMS director Josh Robinson said. He left home around 1 p.m.

Jennifer Yauck is the Oglethorpe County School System’s teacher of the year.  Yauck, who is a science instructional coach and teacher at OCHS, also advises the National Honor Society and the Science Olympiad team.

Naomi McPeake was recognized as a Master 4-H’er and Abigail Whitney finished second in the Dairy Project at the 82nd annual 4-H State Congress in Atlanta in July.  McPeake had been awarded Showmanship Champion at the State Livestock Show in Perry, Georgia.

Local Roundup: Community Day scheduled for OCMS on Aug. 2

The annual Community Day festivities will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at Oglethorpe County Middle School.  It will be the second consecutive year Community Day will be held at OCMS after being moved from Bryan Park for heat concerns in 2024.

There’s a new post office building in Stephens. The U.S. Postal Service moved a new building onto the property, replacing the former building at 187 Railroad Road. The new facility opened on July 10, according to a statement received Tuesday.

Early voting for the Democratic primary runoff for the Public Service Commission continues through Friday, July 11 at the Oglethorpe County Board of Elections. Only those who cast a Democratic ballot or didn’t vote in the primary election on June 17 are eligible to vote in the runoff election.

A representative from Lt. Gov. Burt Jones’ office will be available to meet with the public from 9-11 a.m. Friday, May 30 at the Board of Commissioners office (105 Union Point Road, Lexington).  Luke Hetland, the North Georgia field director, will hold mobile office hours during that time.
