A man wanted for rape in California in 2012 is being held at the Oglethorpe County Jail.

Miguel Morales-Lemus was arrested in Crawford on April 24 after he was stopped for speeding on Hutchins Road.

He didn’t have a valid driver’s license and was also charged with a violation of Georgia’s distracted driving/hands free law, according to the incident report.

“While introducing myself, Miguel had his phone sitting on his lap open and was holding a conversation with someone,” Oglethorpe County Deputy Devin Skillman wrote in his report.

Skillman transported Morales-Lemus to the Oglethorpe County Jail, where a fingerprint check determined he was a fugitive from justice wanted for sexual assault — rape of a drugged victim in Los Angeles in 2012.

A warrant for Morales-Lemus’ arrest, issued by the San Fernando Courthouse, was filed on May 23, 2012.

Sheriff David Gabriel said Morales-Lemus will go through the extradition process, which can take 10-30 days.

Morales-Lemus’ current residence is listed as Winder.
