Maxeys Historic District added to National Register

The Maxeys Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on Tuesday, according to a release from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

“It's a point of pride for the community,” Maxeys Mayor Warren Gilson said. “We've kept our history alive even though a lot of things have disappeared over the years. We still maintain historic buildings.”

The National Register of Historic Places is a collection of places throughout the U.S. that promote the preservation and use of historic places in line with the Historic Preservation Division’s mission.

The Maxeys Historic Interest Group sponsored the nomination, and information was compiled by Lydia Joffray of the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission in Athens.

Maxeys joins several other Oglethorpe County properties on the National Register of Historic Places. They include:

  • Watson Mill Covered Bridge and Mill Historic District
  • Smithonia
  • Amis-Elder House, Crawford
  • Crawford Depot
  • Langston-Daniel House, Crawford
  • J.L. Bridges Home Place, Lexington

The various residential home styles include “double pen, saddlebag, central hall, New South cottage, gabled wing cottage, Queen Anne cottage, pyramidal cottage, Georgian cottage, Georgian house, plantation plain, bungalow, and ranch houses,” the release states.

Architectural styles include “Folk Victorian, Greek Revival, Italianate, Gothic Revival, Colonial Revival and Craftsman,” according to the release.
