Maxeys parade continues to grow

The fifth annual Maxeys Christmas Parade will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 in downtown Maxeys. The parade will go until 1 p.m. Food trucks and the Christmas Market will open at 10 a.m. There will also be live music and a raffle.

Organizers hope this year’s Maxeys Christmas Parade will bring Christmas spirit to the city and grow connections throughout the community.

“It’s about spreading good cheer, having fun in the community and starting off the Christmas season,” organizer Heather Parham said. “Being a part of a small community where you know each other is really unique and special.”

This is the fifth year for the Maxeys parade, which will start on Sunset Drive and will be filled with Christmas-themed floats and cars.

And what’s a Christmas parade without Santa, who will be available to take pictures on the apothecary porch.

As usual, there will be vintage cars, tractors and decorated trailers.

The event also will feature food trucks from Kona Ice, Joker’s Barbecue, Peggy’s Barbecue, Thomas’ Tomatoes, Crawford Pizza, Wing King and more. A bake sale will be part of a fundraiser for the community club.

UGA Noteworthy, the University of Georgia’s all-girl a cappella group, will perform after the parade, followed by the Oglethorpe Elementary School chorus and Lexington Baptist Church choir.

Local businesses and vendors will provide raffle prizes for $1 an entry.

The raffle will begin after the groups finish performing their music. Money raised from the raffle will go toward the Christmas parade and upgrading Christmas decorations throughout Maxeys.

Ornaments, gingerbread houses, fruit cakes, paintings, jewelry and more will be featured at the Christmas Market.

Barbara Cabaniss, a member of the Maxeys Community Club, said there are over 50 volunteers, ranging from teens to older adults, more than they’ve had in previous parades.
