OCHS marching band ends strong despite low numbers

The Oglethorpe County High School Marching Band concluded its season with a second-place finish at the Tiger Town Throwdown Marching Competition in Commerce on Nov. 2.

The band, under the direction of Lee Jones, performed its 2024 show titled “The Golden Spike” at two competitions this season.

Despite having less than 30 members, the band ended on a positive note, ranked seventh out of the 13 bands participating in the Tiger Town Throwdown.

“Despite being a small band, they remained super dedicated, and I am really proud of all the work they accomplished,” Jones said.

Prior to that competition, the band was seventh in the Georgia MBC: Grayson competition on Oct. 5.

“It was a tough season, but I thought the band did very well throughout it,” drum major Kendall McCurdy said. “Having half of our competitions canceled, we placed very well in the recent competition. I would say that having a small band harmed the performance because it gave us less to work with and, essentially, less freedom. However, I would say it was a successful season and everyone in the band should be proud of themselves.”

The band ended its season with a practice on Nov. 21, in which it celebrated its success this season.

Riley Campbell is one of the band’s two seniors, alongside Natalie Goodin.

“I think we did really well during the season and grew as it went on,” said Campbell, a trumpet player. “Being in a small band definitely helped my performance, and gave me the opportunity to perform around my friends and family, which is definitely my favorite part of being in this band.”
