The Oglethorpe Echo
A high-speed pursuit that started on Smokey Road and Highway 78 ended in the death of an Oglethorpe County resident in Athens-Clarke County on Aug. 29.
Brently Allen Tucker, 35, was killed when the motorcycle he was driving was hit by another vehicle near the Walmart on Lexington Highway in Athens.
Tucker had been pursued by an Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s deputy after an attempted traffic stop at Smokey Road and Highway 78, but the deputy had called off the pursuit before Tucker was hit at the intersection of Lexington Highway and Woodgrove Drive, Oglethorpe County Sheriff David Gabriel said Tuesday.
Speeds hit 100 mph at times during the pursuit, which began about 5:48 p.m., Gabriel wrote on a Facebook post last week.
That was the first of three deaths in the span of less than 12 hours on Thursday and early Friday morning. Gabriel said he was the lead investigator for the Sheriff’s Office during that time period.
He said no foul play is suspected in the death of a 2-year-old in the Sandy Cross area early Friday morning. The toddler was non-responsive when deputies and EMS personnel arrived about 2 a.m. Friday.
Gabriel said Tuesday that he’s waiting on official results from the crime lab.
And about an hour later, a man sleeping on Highway 22 was killed when he was hit by a truck, according to the Georgia State Patrol, which is investigating the incident.
Dalvin Davante’ Daniels of Washington was declared dead at the scene, according to the report.
Gabriel said Daniels had been seen by several people as he walked through Oglethorpe County on Thursday. He was lying in the middle of Highway 22 near Mile Marker 3 when he was hit by the truck, according to the report.
“Each one is certainly tragic in its own way and very sad,” Gabriel said. “I certainly feel for the families.”
