Seven candidates are eligible to run for six posts in Maxeys’ election on Nov. 5.
Qualifying for the 2024 race took place last week at city hall. The positions include mayor and all city council seats. The fee was $1.
Current Maxeys Mayor Warren Gilson said current city councilman Edward Toledano, who co-owns The Gillen House Bed and Breakfast in Maxeys, qualified to run for mayor.
Gilson said he didn’t want to run for another term. He said he wanted flexibility in his personal life and also didn’t want to overstay his time in office.
“I have a philosophy that I learned when I was in graduate school: that 10 years is long enough to serve in any particular position,” Gilson said. “If I ran for mayor again, it would be another four years, which makes it 12.”
Gilson said he still hopes to be involved in city council in the future and qualified for one of the five seats.
For the city council posts, the candidates for each seat were:
- Post 1: Daniel Gorman
- Post 2: Shirley Callahan
- Post 3: Carrie Hayes
- Post 4: Carrie Hyatt
- Post 5: Brian Miller and Gilson
Gorman, Callahan and Hyatt currently serve on the city council.
Elsewhere in the county, Lexington has had an empty city council seat since the resignation of Cindy Haynes in December 2023. However, no candidates signed up during qualifying, city clerk Kim Bradford said.
Bradford said she will reopen the process at city hall from 9 a.m to noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday. If no one shows up, the seat will remain open until next year.
The chances of having candidates come forward in 2025 may be more likely, she said.
“The next year is going to be a little different, because it is an election year for the city anyway,” Bradford said.
