Alex White said he originally had little interest following his parents into the medical field.
“We’re all kind of in healthcare,” White said. “My brother is an ER doctor in Brunswick, my dad was a pharmacist, my mom was a nurse … and then my sister works at UGA. She got her master’s in healthcare journalism.”
However, his path eventually led him to his strengths, and White started in January as a nurse practitioner with MedLink Oglethorpe, making him one of two family nurse practitioners at that location along with Denise Atkins.
MedLink is a primary care center that provides an array of healthcare services with an emphasis on compassion and high-quality care. From treatment of acute illnesses to management of chronic conditions, the care center is equipped to help as many people as they can.
Specializing in family medicine, White works with individuals and families across a wide range of ages, diseases and health needs.
White hasn’t had a typical healthcare career. He’s had a variety of experiences in the medical field since becoming a nurse practitioner in 2018.
Originally, he studied economics at the University of Georgia and wanted to pursue business. After his undergraduate degree, White went back to school and earned an accounting degree before joining the U.S. Air Force.
“I enlisted in the Air Force as an aviation mechanic, all the while working as an accountant,” White said. “It was kinda crazy.”
White first enlisted as an avionics technician with the Air Force, then was an engineer with the Army National Guard as an officer, before switching to the Army Reserve.
He is a major and has spent the last 20 years in the armed forces.
White’s military and healthcare experience led him to a contract in Baghdad in 2024-25, where he performed emergency and primary care.
“We were at a NATO base over there and we were responsible for just the support personnel who were mostly from Asia, Africa, India,” White said. “If they had a complaint or needed a refill on medications, they’d just stop by our little clinic. We didn’t really see a whole lot of emergencies, which is good. It had calmed down a lot from the last 10 years.”
White later worked for Piedmont Urgent Care, before joining St. Mary’s Emergency Department. He even has experience with orthopedics.
While he enjoyed the fast-paced environment of the emergency room, White said he’s happy to be in primary care and enjoys the ability to form relationships with patients.
“It’s interesting to follow them along … as opposed to just addressing their immediate condition,” White said. “You start to see the same people and hopefully move in the right direction.”
