Firefly Trail Inc. is exploring the possibility of adding a spur from Crawford to Lexington.

Plenty of love to go around

April Moore has learned to become creative with Oglethorpe County Family Connection. About a month ago, she started to lead an early literacy program in the school system to encourage the educational growth of kindergartners.

Students get first glimpse at new school

The first round of students and parents walked through the new Oglethorpe County Elementary School at an open house on Tuesday.

New Year’s Day hike draws crowd to Watson Mill

Kicking off the new year outside, Watson Mill Bridge State Park welcomed visitors for its annual First Day Hike, joining state parks in a nationwide tradition on Jan. 1. About 92 people of all ages, including several with their kids and pets, came out to hike the trails in the park.

A different kind of art

Downtown Lexington will add an art gallery early next year that matches the style of the town’s newest resident.   Kristan Ryan is the owner and founder of ArtGirl’s Out Loud Art Gallery located at 104 Main St., across from the courthouse.

Letters to Santa from OCPS second-graders

Twenty-two second-grade students at Oglethorpe County Primary School took time earlier this month to continue the time-honored tradition of writing letters to Santa Claus. Here are the letters.

Oglethorpe among counties that struggle with health care accessibility

You are having a health emergency. You call 911. The nearest hospital is an hour away.  You are diagnosed with cancer, but it took you months to find out because you don’t have transportation to see the one primary care physician in your county.

Hughes found her home in Oglethorpe

Alice Hughes didn’t do anything halfway. In her 20s, she wanted to see Australia — so she boarded a freighter and spent three months traveling through Panama, Mexico and the Galapagos on her way.

Rec department has strong winter season

The Oglethorpe County Recreation Department is gearing up for spring registration, and although participation has plateaued recently, director Michael White said he’s pleased with the programs, with some in high demand.

Dieball’s artifact collection leads to display at library

Kane Dieball was about 10 or 11 years old when he found his first arrowhead in the driveway of his dad’s former girlfriend’s home. A few months later, he found more. Dieball stopped looking for arrowheads for a while, but in the past three to four years, he started collecting again.
