Editorial: Ready for kickoff!

Years ago — to kickoff Monday Night Football — Hank Williams Jr. sang, “Are you ready for some football?”   This week, Oglethorpe County High fans will sing, “Are you ready for some Patriot football?”   Indeed, we are.

Editorial: What’s the hurry?

“I’m in a hurry to get things done Oh, I rush and rush life’s no fun All I really gotta do is live and die But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why”   Remember when the group Alabama struck gold with this country hit?
The Buc-ee’s along I-75, near Warner Robins, is more than a gas station and convenience store. It’s a tourist destination. The first Stuckey’s was in Eastman. I was told the second location was in Jesup, on U.S. 301 North.

Opinion Column: Buc-ee’s had to be born in Texas

The ultimate Texas insult is “All hat and no cattle.”    I’m not sure how many cattle Arch Aplin III and Don Wasek owned — if any — in 1982. But I can tell you the Texans had a humongous herd of guts and vision when they founded Buc-ee’s.

Editorial: It’s school time, again

If you’re wondering where summer went, ask students and Oglethorpe County school personnel.    They know. Summer is just a memory, and it’s time to hit the books.     School starts Monday.   That means those yellow buses will be crisscrossing the county, mornings and afternoons.

Editorial: Welcome relief at the pumps

Inflation and a blistering sun have hammered us this summer.     There’s nothing we can do about 100-degree days, but we hope that the inflated fuel prices keep dropping.    How many people have you heard screech, “It cost me $115 to fill up my pickup truck!

Opinion Column: Remembering some playful mischief

Pranks.   I love the playful mischief of a harmless practical joke.   The other day, I got pranked pretty well.   Summertime is bounty-from-the-garden time. When I stopped by my friend’s office, Adam asked, “Would you like one of our cantaloupes?”    “Sure,” I said.

Opinion Column: Nothing happens until you sell something

A great deal of what is important in life happens because someone sells something. Preachers sell their messages to win souls. Candidates sell their platforms to get votes. Men sell their attributes to get ladies to slip rings on their fingers.

Editorial: What must we do?

Preserving history is an investment. If we ignore aging landmarks, time takes its toll, and the restoration’s tab can be expensive.   Howard’s Covered Bridge is a good example.
