Four thumbs, all upOglethorpe County schools are back in session, and so is nearby UGA. That means summer is slipping away. But the sizzling temperatures aren’t gone just yet.

Editorial: we are grateful for rain, crews

Just how hot has it been? One Oglethorpe County farmer said, “It’s been as red-hot as the hinges on the door to Hades.”  Without irrigation, crops have been burning up in the fields. And how dry? A resident groaned, “If I had wanted to live in Arizona, I’d moved there.

In college basketball, the third month of each year is called March Madness.  In the fifth month, the tag could be May’s Mash Dash to get it all done before the end of the school year. Banquets, awards, field trips, celebrations and graduations pack the calendar this month.

Thumbs up for mowing and safety   We know it’s spring when we see the county’s fleet of orange tractors along the roads. With all the rain, the grass is jumping into high gear. So is the mowing crew.

Take a look at these photos. A reader of The Oglethorpe Echo sent the photos over the weekend. Don’t you wonder, “Who’s doing this illegal dumping in our community?” This mess was made in the right-of-way along Hargrove Lake Road and Suddeth Road.
