Prep Roundup: OCHS athletes head to state track meet

Oglethorpe County’s Darius Heard and Ke’Mauri Brown each qualified in two events for the Class A Division I track meet, which is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at Barron Stadium in Rome.

 

Heard qualified in the triple jump and the 4x100 relay, and Brown qualified in the long jump and relay.

 

Landon Mallonee qualified in the 3,200 meters. Other 4x100 relay team members include: Paris Crowder, Jake Turner, Jordan Johnson and Caleb Stephens.

 

State qualifiers for the girls team are: Denim Goddard (long, triple jumps), Kenzie Henderson (high jump, 300 hurdles), Zy Edwards (shot), Abby Jones (discus), 4x100 relay team (Goddard, Carlee Appling, Kenzie Henderson, Karman Bermudez), 4x200 relay team (Goddard, Bermudez, Sydnie Henderson, Appling), 4x400 relay team (Bermudez, Appling, Sydnie Henderson, Kenzie Henderson), Sydnie Henderson (400, 800 meters), Elin Turner (100 hurdles).

 

Nimmons, Hernandez earn region soccer honors

 

Oglethorpe County’s Mylee Nimmons was the girls soccer defensive player of the year and Henry Hernandez was the boys soccer offensive player of the year for Region 5-A Division I.

 

Emmaleigh Hemingway and Abigail Cabaniss were on the first team, while Khloe Eidson, Marin Sampson and Harper Palmer were on the second team.

 

Hernandez, Demetrio Riosa and Miguel Rios were on the first team, while Jonathan Escalante, Michael Orlowsky and Sergio Alio were on the second team.

 

The Oglethorpe County teams also won sportsmanship awards.

 

OCHS wrestling camp scheduled this month

 

New Oglethorpe County wrestling coach Steve Mason has scheduled a beginner wrestling camp this month for boys and girls who will be in the sixth grade and lower with less than one year of wrestling experience.

 

The camp will be held from 6:30-7:40 p.m. May 28-30 at Oglethorpe County’s wrestling gym (blue building past the board of education office). 

 

The cost is $20. Register through the Oglethorpe County Rec Department; payment is due by May 24. 

 

Coaches include Mason, William Ballard, Nate Owens and varsity wrestlers.
