Oglethorpe County has once again solidified its place as one of Georgia’s top counties for deer hunting, ranking fifth for total deer harvested in 2024-25.

Flag football has solid first season

Growing Oglethorpe County’s inaugural Little League flag football program was a goal of recreation department athletic director Daniel Eubanks this season.

OCHS girls wrestling finishes sixth at Division 2 state duals

Coach Josh Austin had high praise for the Oglethorpe County girls wrestling team, which finished sixth in the Division 2 state duals in its first season as a program.

Prep Roundup: Girls reach dual state championship

Akira Owens, Tristin Caldwell, Cayla Hartrum, Emily Gregory and Nyah McAphee won by pins to lead the Oglethorpe County girls wrestling team to a 60-18 victory over Ridgeland and into its first state dual championship.

OCHS boys basketball focuses on culture

While the Oglethorpe County boys basketball team record isn’t what he hoped, sitting at 1-12 overall and 1-5 in Region 8-A Division I, coach Carlos Strong has faith in his team.  He said he believes they can finish well and build a new culture.

Improvement sparks 8u, 12u championships

Improvement was the name of the season’s game for the 8u and 12u boys basketball teams that played in championship games at Oglethorpe County Rec Department on Jan. 18.  Trae Lovin, coach of the 8u team, said all the players improved throughout the season.

Boys wrestlers struggle, aim for traditional meets

The Oglethorpe County boys wrestling team failed to qualify for the team dual state tournament after finishing fourth at the area tournament on Jan. 9.  Due to weather concerns, the tournament was moved from Jan. 11, putting head coach Steve Mason and the Patriots at a disadvantage.

Spring athletics headlined by new coaches

The earliest date for practice — Jan. 27 — is nearing for spring sports. The Oglethorpe County athletic department will look different with three new head coaches.  The boys soccer, girls track and field, and golf teams will be led by new coaches this year.

Girls wrestlers win area dual title in program’s first year

Josh Austin didn’t think there was enough interest in girls wrestling to have its own program at Oglethorpe County until two weeks before the start of this season.  Now, the Patriots are area champions.  “We had set the goal to go shock the world,” said Austin, who coaches the team.
