Obituary: Mark E. Summers

Mark E. Summers, 64 of Athens, entered his eternal home on Aug. 17, 2023. He was the son of the late Rev. Jack Summers and Frances Ellis Summers.   Mark owned and operated Winterville Tire and Battery in Winterville for many years and recently retired from Evergreen Packaging in Athens.

Obituary: Alice Faye Lowe Miller

Alice Faye Lowe Miller was born on Oct. 9, 1940. She was the sixth child born to Van Lowe and Ludelle Carter Lowe. She was raised on her family farm in Winterville with her nine brothers and sisters. She graduated from Oglethorpe County High School in 1958.

Jessie M. Cox, 87, of Athens, formerly of Oglethorpe County, died Aug. 5, 2023. The funeral service was at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at New Bethlehem Baptist Church, with Pastor O'Marr Curry, eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Ted Hughes was the sixth child of Marvin and Viola Hughes.    He was born on July 31, 1943, in Frederick, Maryland. His family moved to Georgia when he was 6 years old.

Lonnie Appling, 59, of Lexington, died Monday, July 24, 2023. The funeral service was Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Fork Bethel Baptist Church, Pastor Perez Watson, eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Jere Van Mathews, 85, of Lexington, ended his Happy Hour on July 19 at 7 p.m.    A lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, Jere was the life of the party who never met a stranger.

The Rev. Jimmy Crumbley, 83, of Comer, died July 15. The funeral service was Saturday, July 22, at 2 p.m. at Holly Creek Baptist Church, with Pastor David Bell, eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Obituary: Lois Eliza Gilbride

Lois Eliza Gilbride, 80, passed away on July 8, 2023. She was born on Aug. 11, 1942 in Delaware, Ohio, to the late Paul Oller and Elizabeth Freshwater.   She was a loving wife to the late Ronald Gilbride for 45 years.

Mr. James Howard Brown, 80, of Bowersville, passed away Monday, July 17, 2023 at his home.   Born on Feb. 22, 1943 in Bowersville, Georgia, he was the son of the late Browning J. Brown and Doris Imogene Ussery Brown.
