Athletics a family affair for White, Cook

Tripp White signed to play baseball for Andrew College last week, following in a family line that has produced five collegiate athletes.  “It was very exciting,” he said. “It kept me busy for a very long time, but it was good.

Staff Report Keyvon Gresham finished fourth and Walker Compton was sixth at the Class A state wrestling tournament last week at the Clayton County Convocation Center in Morrow. Tanner Mckie was 2-2 and one match away from placing, and Andrew Goller and Kendon Brown were both 1-2.

OCHS baseball searches for bounceback season

The Oglethorpe County baseball team enters its third season under coach Mike Campbell with a hunger for success. With veteran leadership and a young core, Oglethorpe County wants to improve upon last year’s 8-22 record and seventh-place finish in Region 8-A Division I.

Girls wrestlers bear brunt of weather issues

The winter weather has played havoc with Oglethorpe County athletic schedules, especially girls wrestling, which faces two tournaments in three days. The girls wrestling team was scheduled to compete at the area traditional tournament at Locust Grove on Wednesday (after The Echo’s deadline).

Sports overlap, never end for rec department

The Oglethorpe County Recreation Department concluded a busy fall sports season and is transitioning to winter programming as registration begins for spring sports. White said approximately 600 children participated in fall sports, a total consistent with recent years.

Father, daughter duo share special bond

Senior Reese Campbell is the star pitcher for the Oglethorpe County softball team. She isn’t the only Campbell on the field, though.  Her father, Mike Campbell, is an assistant coach for the team and head coach for the OCHS baseball team.

Major League all-stars finish second in district

The Oglethorpe County Major League all-star team finished as district runner-up last Friday morning in Hartwell.  Oglethorpe County needed one win to advance to the state tournament in Macon, but lost to Franklin County twice to end the season. “I was proud of them,” head coach Chuck Gabriel said.

Teams combine for rescheduled Opening Day

Michael White was determined to host the Little League Opening Day on April 12, especially after three rain delays last year meant no Opening Day at all.  “We were so deep in the season after that, we just couldn’t get it done.

Prep Roundup: Turner sparks girls track to victory

Elin Turner won the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the triple jump to lead the Oglethorpe County girls track team to victory over Madison County and Elbert County, and Athens Christian School on March 20. Turner finished with 18 points.
