Prep Roundup: Girls track team off to strong start

Denim Goddard and Zy’Kieria Edwards each won two individual events to lead the Oglethorpe County girls track team to a victory in the Loch Johnson Invitational at Cedar Shoals on March 16.    The Lady Panthers won the event with 155 points to outdistance Towers, which had 122 points.

Winterville’s Dremann runs baseball program

  Cason Dremann wants to grow young boys into men beyond the sport of baseball by instilling life lessons into the game, on and off the field. That’s one of the reasons he founded the 706 Baseball Club.

OCHS baseball infield leveled, mound raised

The Oglethorpe County High School baseball field just received a makeover.    The field was leveled to raise the pitching mound to its proper height and new sod was placed on July 12.

Junior All-Stars are second in tourney

Toccoa defeated the Oglethorpe County Junior League All-Stars 13-2 in the district championship game on Monday night.

Campbell hired to lead baseball program

Oglethorpe County has its new head baseball coach.   Mike Campbell, who spent the past two seasons at McIntosh County Academy, has been hired to take over the program. He was approved at the Board of Education’s called board meeting on June 1.

Patel leaving for job at Commerce

Oglethorpe County athletic director, head baseball coach and assistant softball coach Kris Patel is leaving for a job at Commerce next year.   Patel will serve as an assistant coach in softball and baseball, and teach business education.

Little League, rec department numbers continue to increase

Several trophies will be handed out in Oglethorpe County this week.   Bryan Park is playing host to District 6 Little League championships.

OCHS athletes make all-region teams

The Oglethorpe County High School baseball team had eight players selected to all-region teams. The team finished 17-14 and second in Region 4-AA. The team hosted its first home playoff series since the 2002-2003 season.

Baseball team looks to build on big year

The Oglethorpe County baseball team had two main goals before the season started: Host a playoff game and win a region championship.   “If your goal is not to win a championship I think you’re selling yourself short,” coach Kris Patel said.

World Series Braves win captivates local couple

Barry and Iris Walker had three big items on their bucket list: attend a Little League World Series, a College World Series and a World Series. They just checked one of those boxes off their list.   The Oglethorpe County natives attended Game 4 of the World Series at Truist Park on Oct. 30.
