Holland ‘encouraged’ with passing game

Don’t get Mike Holland wrong.    Oglethorpe County is a run-first football team, but the head coach said he was excited about quarterback Jayden Wallace’s throwing performance at camps last week.

Defense shines in spring game

Oglethorpe County football showcased its new 3-4 defense by shutting out Chestatee in a spring game matchup that finished scoreless on May 18.   The game, which was the team’s final spring event, featured an untraditional format in the first half.

Prep roundup: Wrestling team wins four at Franklin County duals

The Oglethorpe County wrestling team went 4-1 in the Franklin County duals last Wednesday.    The Patriots defeated East Hall 72-10, Winder-Barrow 64-18, Franklin County 37-36 and Cherokee Bluff 56-21. West Oak, the defending South Carolina Class AAA state champion, defeated the Patriots 55-18.

Irwin gets early start on career in medicine

The Oglethorpe County football team has practice until 6:30 p.m. most nights. However, senior wide receiver Nate Irwin leaves at 6 p.m. every Tuesday.    For Irwin, football is simply one piece of his schedule.

Fleming achieves new heights after meniscus recovery

Michael Fleming has an impressive athletic resume.    The wide receiver and defensive back is flourishing his senior season with three picks and two blocked field goals. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown — for the first time since middle school — in last week’s loss to Athens Christian.

Football game moved to Thursday

Oglethorpe County’s home football game has been moved to 7 p.m. Thursday.    With Hurricane Ian predicted to move into Georgia on Friday, Oglethorpe County school officials moved the game against Seckinger up one day.
