School officials: Car rider changes work

The revised car rider line implemented at Oglethorpe County Elementary School last Wednesday has been successful in solving traffic congestion, school officials said.    The plan directed afternoon car riders off Fairground Road and around the transportation department building.

Women’s ag conference scheduled for Friday

Staff Report   The Southern Women in Ag team will host a hands-on workshop on beef cattle and small ruminants from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at the Oglethorpe County Ag Center.    The program is for women interested in farming, cattle or small ruminant production.

Volleyball team off to 9-2 start

Staff Report Kenzie Henderson had nine kills and Sofia Horsley had nine aces to lead the Oglethorpe County volleyball team to a three-set victory over Prince Avenue Christian School and a two-set win over George Walton on Tuesday.

The Echo's Opinion: Positive signs

If you haven’t noticed, there are positive signs in our community.   Look around.   If you’re traveling on Highway 78 from Athens-Clarke County into Crawford, you’re welcomed by a new mural on the west wall of soon-to-open Crawford Pizza.
One of my goals for the United Kingdom trip was for our grandchildren to visit the graves of some of our “Nasmyth” ancestors in Scotland. “Where are you from?” “Jesup.”   “Where’s that?”   “Southeast Georgia, 40 miles from the coast.”   That usually satisfies folks. Some will say, “Oh, yeah. Do you know so and so?” Indeed, I was born in downtown Jesup.

Mark E. Summers, 64 of Athens, entered his eternal home on Aug. 17, 2023. He was the son of the late Rev. Jack Summers and Frances Ellis Summers.   Mark owned and operated Winterville Tire and Battery in Winterville for many years and recently retired from Evergreen Packaging in Athens.

Alice Faye Lowe Miller was born on Oct. 9, 1940. She was the sixth child born to Van Lowe and Ludelle Carter Lowe. She was raised on her family farm in Winterville with her nine brothers and sisters. She graduated from Oglethorpe County High School in 1958.

Opinion Column: Here’s how Sanford Stadium got its fabled privet hedges

A version of this column was first published on Feb. 27, 2013.   Gov. Lamartine Griffin Hardman was a progressive, but stern governor. In 1929 he decreed no vehicles of the University of Georgia should leave Clarke County.   Under normal circumstances, that’d be an easy rule to follow.
