Oglethorpe County District 1 Board of Education member Collin Cherry has resigned from his position, effective last week, to pursue the school system’s transportation director position.

“It has been my pleasure to serve beside you and the other board members over the last 6½ years,” Cherry said in the letter to BOE Chair Becky Soto. “I feel as if we have accomplished some great things together. I wish all of you continued success in your roles.”

Soto said the letter, which was submitted May 23, was approved by the BOE. His letter has been sent to Gov. Brian Kemp, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, State School Superintendent Richard Woods and Marilyn Huff-Waller, Oglethorpe County’s board of elections supervisor.

Cherry’s term was scheduled to end in December 2024.

The BOE has 60 days to fill his position with an appointed resident from District 1. His position will be up for election in November’s regular election.

Phillip Todd, the previous director of transportation, retired in April. The board will begin interviewing candidates this week.

Soto said this was an unexpected change for the board.

“Mr. Cherry has served with me on the board of education for six years,” Soto said. “He is an excellent board member and excellent advocate for school. It will be hard to replace him, and difficult to find someone to fill his shoes.”
