Local Roundup: Qualifying for elections scheduled for next week

Most of the election news is about next year’s governor and senate races, but several key items and city seats are on the ballot in Oglethorpe County this year.

 

County-wide, a Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST), which was brought about by HB 581, and renewal of the Education Special Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) are on the ballot.

 

The general election, which is scheduled for Nov. 4, will also include a statewide election for two of the five seats on the Public Service Commission. 

 

The mayor and city council seats will be on the ballot in Lexington and Crawford.

 

Crawford will hold qualifying for mayor and five council seats from Aug. 18-22. Those interested in running must be a resident of Crawford for one year, a registered voter in Crawford and 21 years old. 

 

Qualifying fees are $9 for all seats. 

 

Those who qualify can sign up at City Hall from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of that week. City Hall is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

 

In Lexington, those interested in running must be a resident of the city, a registered voter in Lexington and 21 years old. 

 

The qualifying fees are $20 for mayor and $10 for city council. To qualify, go to City Hall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 18-21.

Squirrel season to open Aug. 15

 

Squirrel season in Georgia opens Friday, Aug. 15.

 

It will run through Feb. 28 and the maximum daily limit is 12 per hunter. Both gray and fox squirrels can be harvested.

 

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division encourages hunters to review hunting regulations for any Georgia Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), Voluntary Public Access areas or department managed lands.

OCHS seeks groups for homecoming parade

 

Oglethorpe County High School is looking for businesses, teams, clubs and organizations to join this year’s homecoming parade, which is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 4 in downtown Crawford.

 

The annual parade will depart from and return to Bryan Park, and travel on North Street, past the depot and proceed down North Woodlawn Drive.
