Firefly Trail Inc. has helped organize group walks for Smokey Road in Crawford and in Maxeys as part of Celebrate Trails Day on Saturday, April 25.
The walk on Smokey Road will start at 9 a.m. and the one in Maxeys will begin at 11 a.m.
Maxeys, where 1.1 miles of the trail is complete, also will have hot dogs.
Residents of Smokey Road “are excited about the prospect of the Firefly Trail eventually being built and providing them with a safe, convenient place to walk and exercise,” trail development director John Kissane wrote in an email to The Oglethorpe Echo.
About 10 community members will join members of the North Oglethorpe Friends of the Firefly Trail in the Smokey Road walk, Kissane said.
In Maxeys, the Georgia DNR’s Recreational Trail Program is funding the remaining 0.9-mile segment that will complete the trail in the town.
A 4.5-mile segment from Maxeys to the Greene County line has been approved for funding through the federal Transportation Alternative Program, administered by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Other Celebrate Trails Day walks will be held in Athens, Union Point and Winterville. The event is promoted nationally by Rails to Trails Conservancy.
