New superintendent contract is approved

CORRECTION: Phillip Powell has taught in both Franklin and Gwinnett counties. An earlier version of this story had the incorrect counties listed.

The contract for incoming superintendent Phillip Powell was unanimously approved by the Oglethorpe County Board of Education during its work session on Tuesday.

“We’re married to each other now,” Powell said at the meeting.

The contract is set to begin July 1.

“I appreciate ya’ll,” Powell said. “Thank you.”

He serves as the chief academic officer for Commerce City Schools and has been an educator there since 2017. He was a science teacher in both Franklin and Gwinnett counties before becoming assistant principal of Commerce High School.

After a 22-year career in education, Powell said he wanted to pursue Oglethorpe County School’s “opportunities and potential to grow.” He previously said he plans to be in Oglethorpe County for the long term.

Superintendent Beverley Levine’s retirement will be effective June 30. Levine has spent her career in Oglethorpe County, starting as a teacher in 1987. She worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal before becoming the superintendent in 2015.
