The Oglethorpe County School System has been awarded $10,000 from the Rural Workforce Preparedness Grant, Sara Hughes, the director of federal programs, said in an email release to The Oglethorpe Echo.
The school system will receive $5,000 for the UGA STEM Camp Selection program, which will provide 10 scholarships for students in need.
The school system will ask “teachers to recommend students in grades 8-11 who they believe would benefit from a STEM camp endeavor, based upon, students who exhibit an aptitude for STEM careers, while especially considering those who might not otherwise have an opportunity to participate in a summer STEM program due to economic and/or travel difficulties,” Hughes wrote in the email.
The school system also will receive $5,000 to fund five internship stipends to offer CTAE teachers an off-campus opportunity to work in an industry related to their teaching pathways.
Participating teachers will be reimbursed at a rate of $1,000 each for completing their five-day off-campus internships, Hughes wrote.
