Sniff, Morcom to run for Arnoldsville mayor

Most elected officials in Oglethorpe County at the city level will be familiar faces this fall, but a contested mayoral race in Arnoldsville and two vacant city council seats in Lexington could bring new titles for some in public service.

The deadline to qualify for the Nov. 7 mayoral and city council elections in Lexington, Crawford and Arnoldsville was Aug. 23.

Arnoldsville

In Arnoldsville, the Nov. 7 election will determine both the interim mayor, whose term will end on Dec. 31, and the new mayor.

Council member Danny Sniff is the only candidate running for interim mayor. He will finish the remainder of former mayor George Spearing IV’s four-year term. Spearing resigned earlier this year when he moved outside the city limits.

But current Mayor Pro Tem Danny Morcom and Sniff will be on the ballot for mayor in November. The winner will assume his post in 2024.

The three remaining city council members, Norma Craddock, Jack Norman and Nick Sanders qualified for reelection. Blake Arnold, Joel Kriner and Joyce Sniff also qualified.

Six candidates will compete for five city council seats.

Lexington

Only three of the five current city council members, Ronnie Boggs, Jill Severn and Cory Clayton, qualified for this fall election. They are running unopposed.

Craig Snow, who has been mayor since July 2021, is also running unopposed.

Council members Greg Reece and Cindy Haynes did not qualify for reelection, leaving two vacant city council seats.

Lexington Clerk Kim Bradford said a special election to fill the vacancies will likely be held on March 19, 2024. This is the earliest a special election can be held by Georgia law

Crawford

Mayor Seavy O’Neal III will hold his post for another term, along with council members Diane Brewer, Brenda Butler, Kathy Little, Sandra Sheridan and Johnny Lynn Shedd. All candidates qualified unopposed.

Because of that, there won’t be a city election this fall.

Maxeys

There will be no elections in Maxeys this fall.
