Oglethorpe County’s Walker Compton, a freshman, finished second (106 pounds) in the Walnut Grove Invitational on Saturday.
Kendon Brown (157) was third, Luke Holbrooks (138) and Christian Harris (165) were fourth, and Logan Bruce (144) and Ethan McLean (165) were fifth.
The Patriots will compete in Ringgold this weekend and Compton will travel to compete in the Tulsa Nationals, one of the largest youth events in the country.
"We will be counting on a lot of unproven wrestlers this year,” coach Steve Mason said. “I know early in the season, things will look a little rough until we get everyone in the correct weight classes and our football players back on the mat, but I think when things really count, we will be a solid team.”
Gabriel’s 27 points leads girls basketball
Carlie Gabriel scored 27 points and had seven assists and six rebounds to lead the Oglethorpe County girls basketball team to a 64-40 victory over Franklin County on Nov. 13.
Marin Sampson had 12 points and 17 rebounds, and Elin Turner finished with 12 points and five rebounds for the Patriots (1-1).
Oglethorpe County hosts Social Circle on Friday, Nov. 21. The girls game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m.
