Prep Roundup: Lady Patriots remain undefeated in region

Kenzie Henderson scored 19 points, had seven rebounds and 11 steals to lead Oglethorpe County to a 66-23 victory over Jasper County on Tuesday night.   The Lady Patriots improved to 15-8 and 5-0 in Region 5-A Division I heading into the final regular-season game at Social Circle on Friday.

Wrestling team qualifies

Raymond Bentley II, Miles Mason and Tanner Mask won individual titles to propel the Oglethorpe County wrestling team to its fourth consecutive area championship on Saturday.   The Patriots qualified all 14 wrestlers to finish with 239.5 points and defeat host Commerce (218.5), Elbert County (150.

Jayland Richardson and KB Bonds made their college decisions last week.    Richardson signed with Central Georgia Technical College in Macon, saying his favorite part of the process was “seeing my hard work over the years on and off the field finally paying off.

Q&A: Winsett keeps folks on the move

Debbie Winsett, who teaches line dancing at the Oglethorpe County Recreation Department and the American Legion, has been dancing for six years, but started teaching four years ago. Winsett spoke with The Oglethorpe Echo about her class and what she loves about teaching dance.

Goddard’s 20 keeps Lady Patriots on roll

Denim Goddard scored 20 points and Kenzie Henderson had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Oglethorpe County girls basketball team to a 63-34 win over Social Circle on Tuesday night.

Civitan Snowflake 10K kicks off Firefly Trail series

For Randy Randall, the Winterville Civitan Snowflake 10K was more than an ordinary race.    Randall started running several years ago to lose weight, but in 2021, he was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma. He also ran in the Winterville Snowflake 10K last year.

Sports Roundup: Baseball team has holes to fill

The Oglethorpe County baseball team looks to replace old faces with new in hopes of a playoff run this spring.   The Patriots lost eight players to graduation from a team that went 17-14 and 10-2 in Region 4-AA.

OCHS soccer ready for region changes

After a class change during the offseason, the Oglethorpe County High School soccer teams, now in Region 5-A Division I, are preparing for the challenges that come with new competition — and quite a few new faces on their own rosters.

Snowflake 10K kicks off Firefly race series

Everything is on schedule for Saturday’s Winterville Civitan Snowflake 10K, the first race of this year’s Firefly Race Series.    “I’m looking forward to getting our part done,” race president Michael Law said. “I like organizing it, and I’m pretty happy with doing it.

Wrestlers finish fourth at state duals

Oglethorpe County finished fourth at the Class A Dual State championships at Trion last Saturday.   The Patriots, who won the dual title in 2021 and finished second last year, lost to Social Circle in the consolation bracket. They replaced 11 starters from last year’s team.
