Goddard’s 20 keeps Lady Patriots on roll

Denim Goddard scored 20 points and Kenzie Henderson had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Oglethorpe County girls basketball team to a 63-34 win over Social Circle on Tuesday night.

Civitan Snowflake 10K kicks off Firefly Trail series

For Randy Randall, the Winterville Civitan Snowflake 10K was more than an ordinary race.    Randall started running several years ago to lose weight, but in 2021, he was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma. He also ran in the Winterville Snowflake 10K last year.

Sports Roundup: Baseball team has holes to fill

The Oglethorpe County baseball team looks to replace old faces with new in hopes of a playoff run this spring.   The Patriots lost eight players to graduation from a team that went 17-14 and 10-2 in Region 4-AA.

OCHS soccer ready for region changes

After a class change during the offseason, the Oglethorpe County High School soccer teams, now in Region 5-A Division I, are preparing for the challenges that come with new competition — and quite a few new faces on their own rosters.

Snowflake 10K kicks off Firefly race series

Everything is on schedule for Saturday’s Winterville Civitan Snowflake 10K, the first race of this year’s Firefly Race Series.    “I’m looking forward to getting our part done,” race president Michael Law said. “I like organizing it, and I’m pretty happy with doing it.

Wrestlers finish fourth at state duals

Oglethorpe County finished fourth at the Class A Dual State championships at Trion last Saturday.   The Patriots, who won the dual title in 2021 and finished second last year, lost to Social Circle in the consolation bracket. They replaced 11 starters from last year’s team.

Prep Roundup: Goddard sparks first region win

The Oglethorpe County girls basketball team opened Region 5-A Division I play with a 66-58 victory at Prince Avenue on Tuesday night.   Denim Goddard scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Kenzie Henderson added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Patriots (11-8, 1-0 in the region).

Rec registration expected to double this spring

Oglethorpe County Recreation Department director Michael White said spring sports registrations could double this year.   The department expects 700 children to sign up for baseball, softball and soccer this spring, more than twice the 312 participants in 2022.

Wrestlers gear up for Area Duals

Confidence and weight classes: These are two of the main components of the Oglethorpe County High School wrestling team’s ethos as the Patriots head into the 8-A Area Duals on Saturday.  Coach Tim Stoudenmire believes he’s achieved his goal in putting his wrestlers into the right weight classes.

Pittard has something to say on the court

Javaun Pittard was a quiet guy who kept to himself when he joined the basketball program his freshman year.  Now, it’s impossible to miss what he has to say. The junior has been a sensation for the Oglethorpe County boys basketball team this season, with both his play and his words.
