Camps scheduled for OCHS this summer

Oglethorpe County High School will host several sports camps this summer.   While the deadline for the girls and boys basketball camps has passed, there are several happening through the rest of June and in July.   The softball camp is scheduled for June 28-29.

Harrison to take over as OCHS head volleyball coach

Oglethorpe County High School has hired another new coach — but this time she comes from within the school system’s ranks.   Brianne Harrison, former middle school volleyball head coach, has joined the high school in the same role.   “I (am) ready to take on a more competitive game,” she said.

Campbell hired to lead baseball program

Oglethorpe County has its new head baseball coach.   Mike Campbell, who spent the past two seasons at McIntosh County Academy, has been hired to take over the program. He was approved at the Board of Education’s called board meeting on June 1.

Brown to host first summer tourney

Oglethorpe County head basketball coach Larry Brown has a busy summer schedule planned.   Brown and the Patriots — who went 14-14 and 3-3 in Region 5-A Division I last season — will host both a summer camp and a summer tournament, the latter for the first time ever.

Defense shines in spring game

Oglethorpe County football showcased its new 3-4 defense by shutting out Chestatee in a spring game matchup that finished scoreless on May 18.   The game, which was the team’s final spring event, featured an untraditional format in the first half.

Prep Roundup: Rules issue keeps girls from third state title

A GHSA rules infraction likely kept the Oglethorpe County girls track and field team from a three-peat.   Instead, the Lady Patriots finished second in the Class A Division I meet behind Athens Christian School last weekend in Rome. The Lady Eagles had 62 points to OCHS’ 56 points.

Fleming finishes on top once again

Michael Fleming saved his best for last.   Fleming ran a personal-best time of 14.14 to win the 110-meter hurdles at the Class A Division I state track and field meet in Rome last weekend.

Mallonee out to make impact at state meet

Landon Mallonee has experienced the state track and field meet the past two years, but this year’s event holds special meaning for him.   Mallonee, a junior, qualified individually in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and as part of the 4x800 relay team.

Lady Pats win region; Goddard top player

The goal was to win the region. Mission accomplished.   The Oglethorpe County girls basketball team captured the Class 5-A Division 1 championship with a 52-39 victory over Prince Avenue Christian School on Friday night at Social Circle High School.
