Only trash in drained quarries

Law enforcement officials came up empty in their search for the remains of Jimmy Anglin in abandoned quarries on Rocky Drive this week.   They finished searching the quarries on Tuesday, completing two weeks of draining what was initially thought to be one quarry, but turned out to be two.

Hawkins approved as county administrator

After months of discussion and deliberation, the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners approved the motion to appoint a county administrator and administrator ordinance.   Josh Hawkins, who was the county’s director of finance, will hold the title of county administrator.

Elections supervisor Marilyn Huff-Waller is the first person to greet you when you walk into the Oglethorpe County Board of Elections. Surrounded by stacks of paperwork, stamps and envelopes, Huff-Waller is preparing for the Georgia primary on May 24.

Marigold Festival to return after two-year break

The Winterville Marigold Festival is back after two years of disruptions.   The event will include live indoor and outdoor music, food and art vendors, a parade and more for people of all ages on Saturday, May 14 at Pittard Park.

Fines will help pay for bathroom damage

Oglethorpe County School System officials brought charges against two individuals who defaced bathrooms at the middle school last semester.    Their fines will compensate for the costs of repairing the damage, which included broken soap and paper towel dispensers.

200-year-old Titus Parish House is a work in progress

Residents recently celebrated a unique birthday in Lexington: the 200th birthday of the Titus Parish House.    Linda Parish, the current owner, hosted the party on April 16 to show off the home’s antiques and celebrate the work her family has done on the historic residence.

Nurses help county through pandemic

Oglethorpe County has no active COVID-19 cases, which Debbie Furbish, chair of the Board of Health, said, is a “testament to all the medical professionals” throughout the county, but a few stand out.

Eligible children can receive four months of free diapers

Children in Oglethorpe County who are enrolled in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program will be able to receive four months or $400 worth of diapers for free.   Families need to fill out an online form to receive the diapers and up to four children can be listed on the form at hipaa.

News Roundup: Book sale at No. 3 Saturday

The Friends of the Oglethorpe County Library will hold a Satellite Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at No. 3 Railroad Street.    A variety of books, including fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks and paperbacks will be available. DVDs will also be on sale, some titles for $1.
