Recreation department looking to boost tennis popularity with new program

The Oglethorpe County Recreation Department is starting a youth and adult tennis program March 28 with an eye to what it could mean for the sport’s growth in the schools and the county.   The program was started by Ronnie Boggs and his wife, who play tennis regularly at the recreation department.

Q&A: Competitiveness, teammates dive McGarity to letter in four sports

Luke McGarity has played sports since he was young, but he refers to his teammates and family as the inspiration for his love of athletics. A junior at Oglethorpe County High School, he’s lettered in four sports: basketball, cross country, golf and track.

Henderson soars in first track meet

The Oglethorpe County girls track team, the defending Class AA state champion, rolled in its season-opening meet.   Propelled by Kenzie Henderson’s state-best high jump (5 feet, 6 inches), the Lady Patriots scored 152 points to win the George Walton Invitational on March 3.

State playoffs part of growth process for Lady Patriots

The Oglethorpe County girls basketball team has undergone a fast transformation.   The Lady Patriots won two games just two years ago.   They finished over .500 last year.   And this year, they reached the state tournament for the first time in 18 seasons.

Numbers high as rec department gears up for spring seasons

Spring sports registration closed earlier this month and opening day for various sports is quickly approaching. Kristin Porterfield, the program coordinator for the Oglethorpe County Recreation Department, talked about registration, Little League opening day and much more.

Sports roundup: Boys soccer team heads into key game

The Oglethorpe County boys soccer team is off to a strong start.   The Patriots defeated Laney 10-0 on Feb. 24 and Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School (RCTCMS) 9-0 on Feb. 25 for their first winning record since 2018.

Sports Roundup: OCHS baseball now 5-0; ranked 10th in AA poll

Oglethorpe County’s baseball team is off to a 5-0 start.   Russell Smith had two hits, drove in a run, scored another and struck out all three batters he faced to lead the Patriots to a 10-3 win at Richmond Academy on Monday in their first road victory of the season.

OCHS girls golf builds new foundation

OCHS boys golf team hopes to build on success

WATCH: See the boys and girls golf teams in action at a recent practice.   Not having a local golf course hasn't stopped the Oglethorpe County boys golf team from focusing on this season. With last year’s region win under their belt, the team is looking for even more success.
