Sports Roundup: Wrestlers finish third at state

Shane Watson (138 pounds) won his second consecutive state title and Chayton Tuck (126) finished second as the Oglethorpe County wrestling team finished third at the Class AA Traditional state wrestling championship last weekend in Macon.

Lady Pats have their eyes on the prize, again

The Oglethorpe County girls track and field team, the reigning Class AA champions, are looking to repeat this season. But the team lost two seniors from last year’s team, which has changed the dynamic of their season.

Freeman looks for big season from Fleming, Patriots

Maurice Freeman has a few things he’d like to accomplish in his first season as the head boys track coach at Oglethorpe County.   As an alumni of the school, he said he’d like to give back to his community and help current athletes sign with a Division I program or become a collegiate athlete.

8-year-old basketball star becomes a champion after falling short last season

This time last year, 8-year-old Reggie Mattox wasn’t celebrating at the end of his basketball season. Instead, he said he worked harder on his game.   The results showed this year, when he and his team won the Oglethorpe Recreation Department 8U championship.

Sports Roundup: Wrestlers have ‘shot’ at traditional title, OCHS girls basketball results

Tim Stoudenmire said his Oglethorpe County wrestling team has a shot at the Class AA title after 13 wrestlers advanced through the sectionals to the traditional state championships, which will be held in Macon.

Seniors provide experience, knowledge to teammates

With eight returning seniors, the Oglethorpe County baseball team aims to improve on last year’s 15-18 record.   “These guys gaining another year of experience and going through the rigor of a complete summer and fall offseason and full 30-game spring season will help,” coach Kris Patel said.

Sports Roundup: Wrestlers have ‘chip’ on shoulder heading to state

Oglethorpe County will have a full house in the first round of the Class AA state tournament, which starts on Saturday at the Lakepoint Sports Complex in Cartersville.   All 14 Patriots advanced to state by accumulating enough points to win the 5-AA championship last week.

Girls soccer determined to win region

The Oglethorpe County girls soccer team looks forward to building on last year’s success.   “We had a strong team last year, and I loved watching them grow,” coach Mary Kate Shealy said.

Organizers hope race series will boost running in Oglethorpe

Commitment is key for OCHS boys soccer team

There are only three seniors on this year’s team, so Oglethorpe County boys soccer coach Erich Forschler said the focus is simple.   “​​There’s really two things that I’m harping on —  that everybody commits 100% and (that) they're there,” he said.
