Commission approves A1 modifications

The Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved revisions to the A1 Zoning District ordinance following a recommended approval from the zoning board at its Monday meeting.

County budget on agenda for commission meeting

Oglethorpe County usually allocates the majority of its budget to public safety, specifically to the Sheriff's Office, jail and emergency medical services (EMS).  The FY26 budget, which is being finalized and will be on the agenda for the Board of Commissioners at their Oct. 6 meeting (6 p.m.

County is rewriting rezoning ordinances

New subdivision requirements and clarification of current rezoning ordinances are coming to Oglethorpe County, likely increasing the waiting period between property splits.  The changes come after an influx of subdivision requests to the zoning board and the Board of Commissioners.

County's first drone will be for mapping

The first of three new drones has arrived in Oglethorpe County.  The Parrot ANAFI USA drone, roughly 15 inches by 15 inches in size, will be used by the county for mapping and surveying purposes.

Debates highlight meeting

Rezoning debates dominated the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday, with the first four items on the agenda taking up the majority of the more than three-hour meeting.

County votes to decrease millage rate

County millage rates will decrease for the third consecutive year after a unanimous decision by the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners Monday night.  “That’s always a goal — three years in a row,” Chairman Jay Paul said.

Paul has 2nd term in sights

Jay Paul plans to seek a second term as chair of the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners.   “I lived in this county all my life. It’s where I plan on dying,” he said Monday. “This position has been the most challenging thing I’ve ever done in my life.

Ordinances lower penalties on lesser offenses

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved four ordinances that offer the possibility of a lighter penalty for lower-level offenses during its monthly meeting on Monday night.
