Schools have later start, fewer long breaks in 2026-27

The Oglethorpe County School System will push back the start of the 2026-27 school year by one week to Friday, Aug. 7, according to the recently approved academic calendar. School began on Friday, Aug. 1 this year.

Levine to retire at the end of school year

Beverley Levine, superintendent of the Oglethorpe County School System, plans to finish the school year and then retire, she stated in a letter to faculty and staff last Friday.

BOE approves literacy coach, personnel for new school year

The Oglethorpe County Board of Education approved personnel recommendations for the 2025-2026 school year during its Tuesday meeting, including a new literacy coach for the elementary school.Rebecca Crook will take the role of instructional literacy coach at OCES.

BOE recognizes classified employees of the year

 The Oglethorpe County Board of Education celebrated the classified employees of the year at each of the schools during its monthly meeting Tuesday night.

School closings are group decisions

When Oglethorpe County experienced recent freezing temperatures, students across the county held their breath each morning hoping for school closures or delays.

Enrollment numbers on rise at every school

Enrollment in Oglethorpe County schools increased by 88 students from last year and 132 from two years ago this year. The numbers don’t include pre-K or special needs preschool students.   Total enrollment is 2,259 students, an increase from 2,171 last August and 2,127 in 2021.

Camacho selected to fill District 1 BOE seat

Guillermo Camacho was selected to fill the District 1 seat on the Oglethorpe County Board of Education at its meeting on July 20.    He replaces Collin Cherry, who resigned from the position on May 23 to pursue the school system’s transportation director position.
