Mount Olive’s Community Fun and Resource Day brings folks together

Aiming to bring the community together in the wake of COVID-19’s impact on smaller, local churches, Mount Olive Baptist Church held its first Community Fun and Resource Day on Sept. 13 at the Crawford Depot, connecting people with aid and opportunities they might not otherwise know or access.

Home prices on the rise in county

Home prices continue to rise in Oglethorpe County as the area struggles with less inventory and more demand, according to recent data from Georgia Multiple Listing Service (GAMLS), the state’s comprehensive real estate database.

Learning to save lives

Generations of Oglethorpe County residents have tales of unexplainable sounds, spectral figures and folklore tied to the many historic landmarks in the area.

Oglethorpe population continues to increase

For families like the Nations, generational ties to Oglethorpe County run deep — 93 years deep.  “My mother and father was Fred Duncan Nation and Bertha Mae Nation,” said Ora D. Nation, who is 86. “They moved out of North Carolina near Dillsboro in 1932.

A new truck ordinance is in effect following the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners meeting last week.

Millstone Memorial: Two centuries later, family to hold service for ancestors

On Feb. 4, 1837, an Oglethorpe County man named Nathan Harris offered 1 acre of land along Millstone Creek to Millstone Baptist Church.  Nearly 200 years later, his descendants are returning to that land to honor him, and two other ancestors, at a memorial service on Sunday.

Oglethorpe’s family-owned farms persevere through changing times

Nine-year-old Madelyn Johns spends her Friday afternoons running through rows of crops spread across her family's 12 acres of plantings at Hickory Hill Farms in Carlton.  Across the field, her youngest brother Matthew, 6, clutches a handful of freshly pulled carrots.
