Lady Patriots feel prepared for Region 5-A schedule

The Oglethorpe County girls basketball team passed its first Region 5-A Division I test on Tuesday night.   The Lady Patriots, who are ranked fifth in Class A Division I, defeated Prince Avenue 74-43 to improve to 16-2, the first of six region games to conclude the regular season.

New home dugout, bullpens highlight baseball renovation

Mike Campbell was embarrassed by the state of his new home field when he took the Oglethorpe County baseball job last spring.   He said being in the old dugouts felt like “you were in a little cage” because of how condensed and small they were.

Prep roundup: Wrestlers head to Class A duals

The OCHS wrestling team is the eighth seed and will face McIntosh County Academy in the first round of the Class A team dual state championship this week. The Patriots (30-6) advanced by finishing second in the area duals behind Commerce on Saturday. They defeated Elbert County in the semifinals.

Patriots look to finish strong

The Oglethorpe County boys basketball team has an opportunity to finish strong with nine regular-season games left.    Coach Larry Brown said the season has had ups and downs — including a three-game losing streak — but he’s excited for the team going forward.

Denim Goddard scored 21 points and the Oglethorpe County girls basketball team rallied for a 60-48 overtime victory over Elbert County on Saturday.   Elbert County led until the final two minutes, when the Lady Patriots tied the game to force OT.    OCHS, No.

Mask makes presence felt

Steve Mason saw potential in Tanner Mask more than five years ago.   Mask was in the seventh grade and new to wrestling, but Mason, who was the Oglethorpe County Middle School coach at the time, soon realized he had a gem.

Prep roundup: No. 5 Lady Patriots win one, lose one

Aariana Bell scored 15 points, but Lakeview Academy defeated the Oglethorpe County girls basketball team 50-39 on Tuesday night.   The loss dropped the Lady Patriots, who are fifth in the GHSA Class A Division I rankings, to 13-2 this season.   Bell added five rebounds and five steals.

Wrestling team overcomes injuries

Oglethorpe County’s wrestling team hasn’t had the easiest of paths this season. The Patriots, despite a 27-3 record in dual meets, have dealt with several injuries to their starting lineup.   Head coach Tim Stoudenmire said the Patriots have been fortunate to stay injury free the past few seasons.

Prep roundup: Lady Patriots (12-1) continue hot streak

There’s no slowing the Oglethorpe County girls basketball team.   The Lady Patriots improved to 12-1 with three victories in the Carolina Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina, last week.   OCHS is No. 5 in the GHSA Class A Division I state rankings and fourth in the AJC rankings.

Richardson wins championship in first college season, looks for what’s next

Former Patriot Jayland Richardson’s first year of college football couldn’t have gone any better.
