Obituary: Robert Earnest “Bob” Jones

Robert Earnest “Bob” Jones, 87, of Athens, passed away in his sleep on Nov. 16, 2024.  Bob was raised in Oglethorpe County by the late Albert Johnson and Martie Tiller Jones Johnson. The oldest child of the late Roy Jones and Martie, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Mary.

Obituary: Joe L. Hill

Joe L. Hill, 70, of Lexington, died Nov. 8, 2024. The funeral service was at 1 p.m.  Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024 at New Hope Baptist Church, with Pastor Michael Gresham, eulogist. Interment was in the Jennings Cemetery.

Obituary: James Charles Chastain

James Charles Chastain, 86, better known as “Jimmy” and “Dooley,” of Carlton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, at Piedmont Athens Regional in Athens. Jimmy was born in Anderson, South Carolina, on May 2, 1938, to James Carl Chastain and Sara Fannie Brooks Chastain.

Matthew Whitehead, 50, entered the gates of heaven dancing and singing on Nov. 7, 2024.  He was born June 27, 1974, to Kenneth and Linda Moore Whitehead. He was a graduate of Madison County High School.

Jerilyn Titus Nixon, 47, of Crawford, Georgia, died on Nov. 7, 2024. She was the daughter of Linda Parish and the late Jerry Titus of Lexington, Georgia.

Perry Henderson Pledger, 81, husband of Deborah Zucker Pledger, died on Monday, Oct. 21, 2024.  Born in Athens, he was the son of the late Harvey Henderson Pledger and Mary Lucille Freeman Pledger, and brother to the late Sandra Butler.

Steven “Steve” Douglas Jones, 60, died on Oct. 24, 2024.   Born in Athens, he was the son of Clifford Carter Jones and Effie Mae Hawkes Jones. Steve was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Sherman B.

Elaine Jean Girman, 85, passed away on Oct. 30, 2024.  Born in Griffith, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Gerrit Bakker and Jennie Bakker.

Obituary: Krystal Spring Cox

Krystal Spring Cox, 48, of Hull, passed away on Oct. 28, 2024.  She was the daughter of the late Jonas Bales and Betty Jo Bales. A lifelong resident of the area, she was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan.  Krystal was a homemaker who loved her family and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
